A major deepwater port engaged Excellence Engineering to review their measurement sizing to address measurement error issues.
The analysis performed Excellence Engineering determined that many of the port's meters were being operated outside of their flow range for optimal measurement accuracy. During the sizing review the engineer on the project noticed that piping configuration was less than optimal and outside of API MPMS guidelines. Due to the major cost of taking these systems down for reconfiguration, a 3D computational fluid dynamic study was performed. There results of the analysis showed the root cause of the measurement issues. The system was inducing very complex flow distortions. Custom flow conditioners were designed and installed to remedy the issue. The construction impact was very minimal in comparison to reworking the meter piping and measurement accuracy was brought within the required tolerance recapturing margin on a facility with a throughput of over 1.2 million barrels a day.
